“Differentiate or die — that now goes for all of us”

July 13, 2011

Great op-ed in today’s New York Times by Thomas Friedman (opening keynote at SLA 2011) entitled “The Start-Up of You” discussing how today’s events are impacting jobs in the long term, and specifically how we should be looking at jobs (and our careers).  He quotes the founder of LinkedIn, Reid Garrett Hoffman:

You can’t just say, ‘I have a college degree, I have a right to a job, now someone else should figure out how to hire and train me.’ ” You have to know which industries are working and what is happening inside them and then “find a way to add value in a way no one else can. For entrepreneurs it’s differentiate or die — that now goes for all of us.

Definitely a must-read for all of us.

Great article…I think it’s aligned with a few of the NPR stories this week like http://www.npr.org/2011/07/13/137792911/renewed-focus-on-innovation-could-boost-economy
