Starbucks, free access to NYT, WSJ, and USA Today

August 13, 2010

A few months back (coincidentally the same time as SLA Annual), Starbucks announced that not only were they allowing unlimited free wi-fi, but that they were going to launch the Starbucks Digital Network (SDN), which was going to allow free access to premium content such as the Wall Street Journal.  As an information professional, that certainly was of interest – at the time, I asked the Dow Jones reps at SLA how this was going to play out, and they didn’t have any information.

Now, more information is coming out as the rollout of SDN is nearing.

It’s still true that at Starbucks, you’ll be able to get free access to the Wall Street Journal – although it seems that it will be just what is currently available as free (thus, no archives, apparently).  However, users also will be able to get premium access to USA Today and the New York Times, as well as other content.

The full article is here from an interview with Starbucks’ VP of Digital Ventures, but it certainly is a trend worth paying attention to as information professionals (especially for independent info pros).
