For both seasoned info pros and those just entering the profession – Simmons GSLIS recently posted a great podcast (mp3) of Mary Ellen Bates’ discussion at Simmons on April 26, 2010 – 25 minutes of prepared remarks and 90 minutes of Q&A.

Mary Ellen is on the SLA Board of Directors, is a frequently requested speaker at SLA, and is a great resource for anyone in the industry.  Topics covered in this podcast include:

  • How to succeed in today’s special library
  • Why titles don’t matter
  • How to answer the question “what do you do?”
  • Why talking about librarians being better than Google might be a fruitless endeavor
  • Why you might want to try introducing yourself as part of the “information mafia”
  • Why “librarian” may not be a compelling description
